Downloading Joomla Extensions

So you downloaded this compressed file and you have no clue if this is a infofscking component, mambot/pluging, or module. Don’t sweat it son, just read along.

Check the filename:
The first thing you want to do is check the filename. Most developers will follow the established practice for naming Joomla Extensions. Components -> com_componentname.zip, Mambots/plugins -> bot_mambotname.zip or plugin_pluginname.zip, Modules -> mod_modulename.zip. But what happens if the developer was drunk when he/she submitted the extension for download, and they decided to ignore any kind of naming convention?

Extract the downloaded extension.

After extracting the downloaded file search for the .xml file. This contains all sorts of neat information about how the install is going to take place. Along with this information there is also a line that tells Joomla! if this is a component, mambot/plugin, or a module. I looks like this:
<mosinstall type="component" version="1.0.0">
or this
<mosinstall version="1.0.12" type="mambot" group="editors">
or this
<mosinstall type="module" version="1.0.0">
For now you’re basically concerned with the “type” attribute. Pay attention son!!

In a Zen statement: Basically a Joomla extension is any program or application that extends the core functionality of the Joomla! CMS. Think forum, directory, comments, galleries, so on and so on, something you could blow on… sorry, just flexing my rap skillz.

There is more to it...

So you got your infothugged out template, and you're feeling it, loving it, and can't stop looking at it.  Good job son!  Now, since this site is dedicated to non-readers I will continue with an abstraction layer of simplicity, as oppose to going into nerdy details about the possible powers of your Joomla! template.

How will content be laid out on your new template?  For the most part you might be able to tell what goes "left", what goes "right, and maybe even what goes "top".  But why guess?  This isn't the damn lottery; this is your pride and joy web presence.   Enough suspense add the following to your url in order to view the different module positions available on your new Joomla Template:  index.php?tp=1  In other words http://yourdomain.com/index.php?tp=1

Repeat after me:

JED is the Joomla Extensions Directory

JED is the Joomla Extensions Directory

JED is the Joomla Extensions Directory

....

Every infofscking day I come across some wanker on #joomla (freenode) asking "Where can I download extensions/add-ons/components/modules/plugins/naked women for Joomla".  This never fails to bring the infoSRSS out of me.  Honestly, you went to joomla.org, and you didn't see the big ass "button" that reads "Extensions"?  You clicked on download, got sent to joomlacode.org, and you didn't see the big ass "button" that reads "Extensions"?  That's a new level of "I dunt reed".

Visit the JED , and spend some quality time there.  If you thought about it, someone probably already implemented it.

I told you supergreg

Like the homey Bob Marley said "Collective security for surety". The "how secure is Joomla?" question is about as common as ASL was in those dumbass AOL chat channels. Put it this way, it was, and still is, developed by a group of humans, and since humans are animals, most likely there are probably still a few lines of animalistic code in there. That's just about how it is for every piece of software developed by humans. So until we get to the point of outsourcing aliens, what should you do about Joomla security?

We know how much you hate reading so lets cut it short for now. In a later piece we will provide more general tips with regards to extensions/add-ons. Don't take this whole security thing lightly homes. Next thing you know someone has an amateur pr0n clip on your front page, and you're sitting back like a infopayaso wondering how and why.

When the cat's away, the mice will play...
